Get your increases and decreases evenly spaced

Just enter the number of stitches you're starting with and how many stitches you want to increase or decrease. Or, if you prefer, enter the total number of stitches you want at the end.

Note that the Increase/Decrease Calculator does not differentiate between knitting in the round and knitting back and forth. It's also best suited for calculating increases and decreases from the right side in stockinette stitch.

Frequently asked questions

It works out exactly where to increase or decrease to go from one stitch count to another, spread evenly across the needle. Enter what you have and what you want, and it gives you the finished pattern line.

The calculator splits the decreases as evenly as possible: knit a set number of stitches, knit two together, repeat. When it doesn't divide evenly, some repeats get one fewer stitch than the others, the same way most printed patterns phrase it.

Same idea in reverse: the calculator spreads the increases as evenly as possible across your stitches, so they don't all end up bunched on one side.

Yes. The numbers hold whether you knit in the round or back and forth, but the calculation doesn't flag when an increase lands right before you turn your work.

The calculator spreads decreases evenly across your whole stitch count. Raglan shaping happens separately at the raglan stitches, so use the calculator for the rest of the round and follow the pattern's raglan decreases on their own.

We have dedicated YouTube playlists for each technique: increases and decreases.
