Customize your own mitten pattern

Are you dreaming of knitting a pair of mittens, but can't seem to find the perfect pattern? With our design tool, you can create your very own custom mitten knitting pattern. You pick every detail yourself, and the pattern is ready in seconds. This is how it works:

Choose the size

Our mitten patterns are available in a wide range of sizes, from baby to men's XL. Pick the size first, and every other choice you make follows along.

Choose the type of thumb

  • The traditional thumb: a simple and effective way of knitting thumbs without increasing for a gusset.
  • The side thumb: worked with increases to shape a gusset inside the palm.

Choose the structure of the mitten

  • Stockinette
  • 1x1 ribbing
  • 2x2 ribbing

Ribbing hugs the hand and stretches, so it fits a bit more snugly than stockinette. It also hides small mistakes beautifully.

Stockinette (red), 1x1 ribbing (orange) and 2x2 ribbing (green). The orange one is a child's mitten.

Choose the type of cuff

  • No cuff
  • Single cuff
  • Double cuff

A double cuff folds back on itself, so you get two layers of wool around the wrist. Perfect for cold mornings.

Choose the type of structure for the cuff

This choice follows your choice of mitten structure. The cuff is where the mitten meets your wrist, so a bit of ribbing here keeps everything in place.

Choose the type of decreases

  • Spiral: the easiest type of decreases.
  • Flat: decreases are worked in each side and the top is closed by using Kitchener Stitch.
  • Side: decreases are worked in each side all the way to the top.

Add color with color charts

This is where it gets really fun. With color charts you draw your pattern straight onto the mitten, stitch by stitch. Pick your colors, click the squares, and watch the design take shape as you go.

Draw your own motif on the back of the hand and the palm. You see the whole chart while you work.

Start from scratch, or use one of our motifs and make it your own. The chart follows your stitch counts, so it always fits the size you picked.

Add any yarn

You can use any yarn for your project. This kind of project does not require many grams of yarn, and is therefore the perfect opportunity to get use out of leftover yarn that you already have at home.

We recommend using woolly yarns, e.g. HipKnitShop Hip Wool, Drops Lima, Isager Aran Tweed, Sandnes Peer Gynt, Cascade 220.

As you can tell, there is a lot of room for creative freedom here! Click the mitten below to start designing your own ✨
